Photo Exhibition “Destiny” by Lim Young Kyun in Agrigento
Event: On September 10, 2025, the photo exhibition “Destiny” by Korean master photographer Lim Young Kyun was inaugurated at the cultural center Le Fabbriche Chiaramontane in Agrigento.
Curatorship: Curated by Gisella Mammano with scientific coordination by Beniamino Biondi.
Organization: Organized by Minerva APS, under the patronage of the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples.

Nam June Paik (1932–2006) was a visionary artist, thinker, and innovator. Considered the “father of video art,” his groundbreaking use of video technology blurred past distinctions between science, fine art, and popular culture to create a new visual language. Paik’s interest in exploring the human condition through the lens of technology and science has created a far-reaching legacy that may be seen in broad recognition of new media art and the growing numbers of subsequent generations of artists who now use various forms of technology in their work.
The artist was born in 1932, in Seoul, Korea. He moved to Germany in 1956 to pursue his study of music, and then to New York City in 1964. Upon his arrival Paik quickly developed collaborative relationships with a circle of now iconic American artists—John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Yoko Ono, and Bill Viola, among others—and spent the duration of his career, which spanned four decades, in the United States. Through his progressive ideas and artworks, the artist dared to imagine a future where today’s technological innovations might exist, and it is this pioneering vision that has continued to shape contemporary visual culture in the United States and internationally.
Nam June Paik: Becoming Robot is the first exhibition dedicated exclusively to the artist to open in New York City in more than a decade, and focuses on Paik’s process and his philosophy toward technology, especially the relationship between technology and the body, and the intersection of technology and culture. The exhibition presents key works from public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia to show one artist’s perspective on modern society’s dependence on technology. Paik’s wildly creative artistic practice and his innovative working methods provide a backdrop for visitors to contemplate the central role technology will continue to play in art and culture for future generations.

프리즘-백남준과 뉴미디어아트
2014년 개관 10주년을 맞이한 경남도립미술관은 매년 현대미술전을 개최해 관람객들에게 다양한 동시대 미술의 향취를 느낄 수 있는 즐거움을 제공해오고 있다. 이번 전시는 한국이 낳은 세계미술의 거장, 비디오아트의 창시자 백남준의 작업세계와 그 뒤를 잇는 작가들의 뉴미디어아트 작품들을 한자리에 소개한다.
“예술가의 역할은 미래를 사유하는 것이다”라는 그의 말에서 알 수 있듯 백남준(Nam June Paik, 1932-2006)은 일찍이 음악과 퍼포먼스, 과학기술을 미술에 접목시키는 장르간의 융합을 통해 행위음악을 개척하고, 세계 최초로 텔레비전을 예술작품으로 만들었으며, 위성예술을 시도했던 선구적인 예술가였다. 특히 역사와 미래를 꿰뚫는 그의 통찰력은 오늘날의 미디어환경을 정확하게 예견했다. 백남준은 컴퓨터가 상용화되지도 않았던 시절인 1974년 미국 록펠러재단에 제출한 논문에서 미래사회에 정보통신의 중요성에 대해 시사하며 다가올 ‘전자 초고속도로(Electronic Super Highway)’ 시대를 대비하기 위한 예술가의 역할을 제안하기도 했다. 미래 환경을 민감하게 감지했던 백남준이 예술을 통해 진정 추구하고자 했던 것은 빠르게 변화하는 과학기술 환경에서 인간이 누구나 주체적으로 참여, 소통하며 긍정적인 삶을 열어나가는 것이었다. 이러한 열린 사고와 시대를 앞서가는 실험정신은 마치 빛이 프리즘을 통과하듯 후대의 미디어 작가들에게 직간접적으로 많은 영향을 끼치며 미래의 비전과 방향을 제시해 주었다.
이 전시는 백남준의 사상과 철학을 엿볼 수 있는 1980-90년대 전성기의 몇몇 대표작품들과 당시의 활동상을 기록으로 남긴 사진을 통해 백남준이 성취하고 실천하려했던 예술적 사유의 가치와 영향력을 제고해보고, 그 연장선에서 실제 그가 예견했던 디지털시대를 살아가는 동시대 작가들의 뉴미디어아트 작품들을 함께 살펴보는데 그 의미가 있다.
제2,3전시실, 특별전시실은 현재 활동 중인 작가들의 뉴미디어아트 작품들로 구성된다. 오늘날 전 세계를 즉각적으로 이어주고 소통케 해주는 인터넷 네트워크의 엄청난 속도와 파급력, 휴대용 컴퓨터와 같은 스마트폰, 인공위성을 이용한 전자기기의 사용 등은 실시간 쌍방향소통을 완벽 구현하고, 주체와 객체의 경계를 허물면서 우리의 일상과 삶을 새로운 차원으로 진입하게 했다. 현대 디지털 테크놀로지의 발전이 가져다준 뉴미디어의 세상에서 작가들은 저마다의 방식으로 기술과 예술, 상상력을 융합해 다채롭고 효과적으로 메시지를 전달하고 관람객들과 소통한다. 뉴미디어는 이전의 매체가 해주지 못했던 것들을 점차 표현가능하게 함으로써 무한한 시공간으로의 감각 경험과 사유의 확장을 우리에게 선사한다.
《백남준과 함께 하루를》에 부쳐
2014년 새봄, 경기도미술관은 올해 첫 전시로 우리나라가 낳은 위대한 예술가백남준을 만나보는 《백남준과 함께 하루를》전을 기획하였습니다. 백남준은 세계 최초로 텔레비전을 예술작품화하고, 영상 이미지를 기록하고 합성하고 편집하여 보여주는 비디오 아트를 창시하는 등 새로운 미디어를 예술로 풀어낸 장본인입니다.
이러한 작업을 통해 그는 서로 멀리 떨어져 있는 것들을 소통하게 하고 관람객이 직접 그 작업에 참여하게 하여 예술작품을 우리 모두가 공유할 수 있는 길을 열어주었습니다. 그래서 전 세계 사람들은 그를 마르셀 뒤샹 이후 가장 독창적이고 혁신적인 천재 예술가라 부르기를 주저하지 않습니다.
《백남준과 함께 하루를》은 우리에게 가장 가깝게 있으면서도 그 실체를 만나보기가 어려웠던 백남준의 삶과 예술 세계를 소개하는 전시입니다. 비디오 조각, 위성 아트 프로젝트의 결과물, 회화와 드로잉 등 백남준의 작품과, 그의 생활과 작품 세계를 예술적 기록으로 남긴 사진 작품을 함께 보여주는 전시를 통하여 백남준이라는 예술 역사상 걸출한 거장을 눈높이에서 친근하게 만나보실 수 있을 것입니다.
아울러 이번 전시가 있기까지 큰 도움을 주신 사진가 임영균 선생님과 백남준아트센터 박만우 관장님께 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전합니다.
